Kanpur: A man ended his life after attacking his wife with an axe following a quarrel in Roor village under Saurikh police station area in Kannauj on Wednesday night, police said. The woman suffered a deep wound on her head. She was admitted to Tirwa Medical College in a critical condition from where she was referred to an advanced medical facility in Kanpur.Govind Dubey, 50, attacked his wife Aarti, 47, after an argument at home. Hearing the commotion, neighbours reached the spot and took the injured woman to hospital, said police. Some people tried to nab Dubey, but he fled with the blood-stained axe. A short while later, his body was found lying in a drain with a plastic cord tied around his neck outside the village.Govind, a farmer, lived with his wife, elder son Mohit, 19, and daughter Radha, 9. His son had gone to visit his maternal grandparents in Etawah.According to villagers, the couple often had arguments over Dubey’s liquor addiction. On Wednesday morning he left for Khadini town and returned at night after consuming liquor. When his wife objected to his drinking, he got angry. In rage he picked up the axe kept in the courtyard and attacked Aarti.Bleeding profusely, Aarti ran out of the house and fell unconscious. The neighbours took her to the CHC in Saurikh, from where she was referred to the govt medical college in Tirwa.Dubey fled from the house and later, his body was found lying in a drain under a tree near the house. On being informed, Khadini outpost in charge Jitendra Kumar and Saurikh station house officer Nagendra Singh reached the spot with force.A plastic cord was found tied around Dubey’s neck, while part of the same cord was tied to a tree branch near the drain. Police said after he hanged himself, the cord could not bear the weight of the body and snapped, causing the body to fall into the drain.CO Chhibramau Suresh Kumar reached the spot along with a forensic team. SP Vinod Kumar said, “Govind Dubey attacked his wife with an axe and then hanged himself from a tree. Police have taken the body into custody. His children are being questioned.”
