Bhilwara: A man died during treatment at a hospital in Jaipur Friday after an imam allegedly poured petrol on him and set him on fire inside a mosque bathroom in Tonk district.The deceased was identified as Hakeem Pinjara (48), a labourer who worked in Jaipur and had returned to his native place in Tonk for Ramzan. According to the police, the incident took place Thursday in the Kalmanda area under Diggi police station, when the man went to the mosque bathroom before his namaz. At that time, Imam Aabid Abdul Raseed (24), a resident of Bilara in Jodhpur district who was living in the mosque, poured petrol on him and set him on fire.The man was rescued in a critical condition by the locals. The police were informed, following which Diggi SHO Gopal Chaudhary reached the spot and the injured man was rushed to Malpura hospital. He was later referred to Jaipur as his condition deteriorated, where he died during treatment early Friday.Tonk SP Rajesh Kumar Meena said the initial investigation has revealed there was a verbal altercation between the Imam and Pinjara Wednesday night. “After pouring petrol, the accused fled on a bike but was detained by the police and is being interrogated.” he said, adding that he would be formally arrested after questioning.Police said the man’s body was handed over to his family after post-mortem.
