Guwahati: A man accused of sexually assaulting a minor was injured in police firing during an investigation by a police team in Kamrup district.According to police, the accused is a 40-year-old man who was wanted in connection with a case involving the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl. Following the case’s registration, the police launched a search operation to find him.“A case was reported on Sunday by the girl’s parents. We located the accused and initially intended to bring him to the station. However, due to a massive crowd gathering and protesting, we had to take the accused to another police station instead,” said Kamrup district SSP Subhasish Baruah.The SSP said while being taken to the police station around 2 am, the vehicle slowed down due to poor road conditions. At that point, Ali allegedly snatched a firearm from one of the officers and attempted to open fire on them. During the exchange of fire, one of the bullets struck the police vehicle, and Ali sustained a gunshot injury to his leg. “He has been rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for treatment,” he added.Police officials said the incident triggered widespread anger among residents, with many gathering outside Ali’s residence and vandalising the property, causing significant damage.Officers added that a case was registered on Sunday under Sections 65(2) and 74 of the BNS Act, Section 6 of the Pocso Act, and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
