Dibrugarh: Newly elected MLA of the Makum constituency Sanjoy Kishan on Monday assessed the damage caused by riverbank erosion in the Kordoiguri area of Tinsukia district.Erosion has been tormenting the region and its indigenous communities for over three decades. The MLA undertook a boat journey from Khamtigoali to Kordoiguri, navigating through the Lohit, Dibru and Dangori rivers to gain a first-hand understanding of the crisis and explore ways to a permanent solution.Kordoiguri has been locked in a relentless battle against the fury of the Dangori River and the Anantanalla channel since 1992. Over the years, the twin threats of flooding and riverbank erosion have steadily consumed villages, swallowed vast stretches of fertile agricultural land, tea gardens and pushed the indigenous Moran community to the edge of survival. More than 650 indigenous Moran families have been displaced and left homeless since the erosion crisis began, with many still struggling with rehabilitation despite alternate land settlements having commenced. Residents live in constant fear that whatever remains of Kordoiguri village could be claimed by the river at any moment, as erosion continues even during the dry season.MLA Sanjoy Kishan inspected the erosion-affected areas, interacted with distressed residents and reviewed the extent of damage with officials from the water resources department. Discussions focused on both immediate relief measures and the formulation of a long-term protection strategy for the area.In 2025, authorities began deploying advanced geo-mega tubes to control river flow and curb ongoing erosion at the site. Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal and former state water resources Minister Pijush Hazarika had visited the area to assess the damage.“Day by day, many riparian areas are becoming increasingly vulnerable due to erosion. It poses a severe threat to the homes, agricultural lands and livelihoods of numerous families. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to take firm and timely action for a permanent resolution. We are prioritising this matter with the utmost urgency,” said MLA Sanjoy Kishan during the visit.Officials from the water resources department briefed the MLA on the current status of erosion control works, including the deployment of geo-mega tubes, and discussed additional measures that could be taken to reinforce the riverbanks ahead of the monsoon. The MLA assured residents of taking up the issue with relevant authorities on a priority basis.
