Ahmedabad: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has clarified concerns over the draft Class IX Mathematics syllabus, stating that key topics have not been removed but have been redistributed and integrated into other chapters.The clarification follows concerns raised after the release of the draft syllabus that important topics such as “Lines and Angles” and “Euclid’s Geometry” have been dropped. NCERT said the document currently under discussion is only a preliminary draft released for feedback from teachers, students, authors and educationists. After reviewing suggestions from stakeholders and subject experts, NCERT and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are expected to release the final syllabus in Oct.According to NCERT, topics that were previously taught as standalone chapters have now been embedded within other chapters.NCERT explained that “Lines and Angles”, earlier taught as a separate chapter, has been integrated into chapters such as “Quadrilaterals” and “Propositions and Their Converses”. Students are already introduced to the topic through the Class VI Mathematics textbook, “Ganita Prakash”, and the concepts are now being developed further through other Class IX chapters.Similarly, NCERT said Euclid’s Geometry has not been removed from the curriculum.The debate over the draft syllabus centred on concerns that the removal of standalone geometry chapters could weaken students’ understanding of foundational concepts.
