Tehatta: Eggs were thrown at Trinamool Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra in Tehatta on Wednesday after she arrived in her constituency to attend a party meeting.Moitra alleged that seven to 10 BJP workers, including the local mandal president and the president and vice-president of the panchayat samiti, threw eggs at her after she came out of the first meeting of the day, even as police stood watching. On Sept 1, Calcutta High Court had directed police to deploy two personnel for a month to protect Moitra during her visits to her constituency, where eggs and stones have been pelted at her repeatedly since her party’s defeat in the assembly elections. On Sept 9, Moitra had written to Krishnanagar SP Atul V regarding her visit to Tehatta from Sept 15 to 17. On Sept 11, the SP wrote back stating she had been assigned a lady assistant sub-inspector to act as the nodal officer for her visit. Moitra did not face any trouble while reaching the meeting venue in Tehatta 1 block. The local inspector in charge, Supriya Ranjan Maji, however, claimed he was unaware of any meeting. In a video message posted on X, Moitra could be heard saying: “We are at Tehatta party office. You can see, we are under police protection, and the court has said no one will throw eggs. They brought eggs right in front of the police. Look at this, all of you. What is happening? Right in front of the police, they are trying to throw eggs… this is contempt of the high court.”“According to the court’s direction, four police personnel were with me. During the attack, more cops came, but instead of controlling the protesters, they forcibly put me into the car. This is what is happening in West Bengal! The high court has been saying this should not happen,” she added. At one point, Maji approached the MP, telling her to leave immediately while questioning why he was not informed about the meeting. Moitra told the officer that it was an indoor meeting and that she had arrived only after receiving the SP’s assurance. As Moitra boarded her SUV, she was hit with two eggs. Refusing to back off, she kept shouting slogans. Her nodal officer was seen pushing away an attacker who had approached her vehicle. Moitra headed to her next meeting, with broken eggshells stuck in her hair and her face smeared with egg.“It is important that people see what is happening in Bengal today. An MP is being attacked with police doing nothing. And this is after a Calcutta HC order. But if they think they can intimidate and scare me, or my party workers off, they have picked the wrong person and the party. We will continue to fight. And when the right time comes, they will have to pay back,” the MP said.In a statement, Moitra also referred to the Supreme Court’s observations while dismissing her plea seeking protection from such attacks.Denying his party’s involvement, Bengal BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said, “Eggs being pelted at a woman… I condemn it if the claims are true. At the same time, it has to be seen whether she has made it all up. I don’t think BJP workers were involved in it.”
