MUMBAI: Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) has appointed Prof (Dr) Jyoti Bhakare as its vice-chancellor for a five-year term, with the appointment made by university Chancellor Justice Atul S Chandurkar, Judge, Supreme Court of India.
Bhakare succeeds Prof (Dr) VP Tiwari, who was serving as the acting vice-chancellor.
Bhakare has over 35 years of experience in legal education and academic administration. Before joining MNLU, she was senior professor and director of the School of Law at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).
She has also served as officiating registrar of SPPU, head of its Department of Law and officiating principal of leading law colleges in Pune.
Her academic and administrative experience includes serving as a visitor’s nominee, nominated by the President of India, on the executive councils of several central universities. She has also served as legal advisor to the Maharashtra government on medical education and health policy.
Bhakare is a member of the World Association of Medical Law and has guided several doctoral scholars during her academic career.
With her appointment, MNLU will have a full-time vice-chancellor following the tenure of Tiwari as acting vice-chancellor.
