Nagpur: Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) administrator Dr Vinky Rughwani called upon the medical fraternity to reaffirm its commitment to ethical practice, compassionate patient care and professional integrity, stressing that while medicine continues to evolve through technological advancements, the human touch must remain at the core of healthcare.
On the eve of Doctors’ Day, Dr Rughwani described the medical profession as both a privilege and a responsibility. “Patients entrust us with their lives. This trust is sacred and must be honoured through empathy and ethical conduct,” he said.
Referring to the rapidly changing healthcare landscape, Dr Rughwani noted that artificial intelligence, digital health and other emerging technologies are transforming medical practice. However, he maintained that innovation should complement — not replace — the values that define the profession. “Technology can support clinical decisions, but it cannot substitute compassion, reassurance, and meaningful communication between a doctor and a patient,” he said.
Dr Rughwani observed that the role of doctors extends far beyond diagnosis and treatment. He said medical professionals have a vital responsibility in promoting preventive healthcare, encouraging voluntary blood, organ, and body donation, spreading awareness about genetic disorders, combating health misinformation and strengthening public confidence in the healthcare system.
Describing ethics as the cornerstone of medicine, he urged doctors to uphold the highest standards of professionalism in every patient interaction. “Clinical excellence earns respect, but integrity, transparency, and compassion earn lasting trust,” he said.
He also stressed that professionalism should extend beyond hospitals and clinics to every sphere of public life, including social media. Referring to the recent controversy involving a medical student ‘s disparaging remarks about cadavers, Dr Rughwani said such incidents are inconsistent with the discipline, dignity and values expected of members of the medical profession.
Acknowledging the increasing pressures faced by healthcare professionals, Dr Rughwani praised doctors who continue to serve under demanding conditions while placing patient welfare above all else.
Extending his greetings to doctors across Maharashtra, Dr Rughwani said Doctors’ Day is not merely a celebration of the profession but an opportunity to renew the pledge of selfless service. “Let us continue to heal with knowledge, serve with humility and uphold the honour of this noble profession,” he said.
