Mumbai: Amid rising energy concerns, the state govt has moved swiftly to accelerate the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections, with a govt resolution (GR) on Friday directing urgent short-term measures to strengthen access across urban areas. In a major push to widen the city gas distribution (CGD) network, the urban development department has issued fresh guidelines aimed at ensuring faster rollout of PNG infrastructure and household connectivity.Acting in line with Central govt directives, the state has initiated rapid pipeline-laying work through CGD companies to ensure seamless and time-bound expansion of the network. The move is expected to improve access to cleaner fuel, reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, and bring greater convenience to households in cities and towns.Under the GR, each CGD company will appoint a district-level nodal officer in every district. These officers will submit weekly progress reports on PNG pipeline expansion and new connections to the state-level coordinator from the oil industry. The coordinator will then compile the updates and submit a consolidated weekly report to the govt, ensuring close monitoring and accountability.The guidelines also lay down clear instructions for consumers and implementing agencies. Applications for PNG connections will be accepted from registered, unregistered and proposed housing societies. Residents of completed buildings under individual schemes may also submit collective or individual applications. CGD companies and their distributors have been asked to facilitate both online and offline application processes and publicise them widely.To improve citizen services, CGD companies must maintain a 24-hour helpline and ensure that consumers do not face unnecessary inconvenience. Based on city population and application volumes, companies have been directed to expand helplines, helpdesks and ward-level centres for accepting new applications. Municipal corporations, district supply officers and CGD companies will also establish information and help centres, while district-level reviews will regularly assess implementation and progress.
