Mumbai: In a move that could impact thousands of app-based cab drivers and millions of commuters across Maharashtra, the state government has directed ride-hailing aggregators, including Bharat Taxi, Rapido, Uber, Ola, Shalini Cabs, and Cityflo, to submit complete details of their drivers within the next three months.The directive, issued as part of the Maharashtra Aggregator Policy 2026, seeks to bring gig-economy drivers into the formal welfare framework while strengthening passenger safety norms. Once verified, drivers will also become eligible for membership of the Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Saheb Maharashtra Auto Rickshaw and Taxi Driver-Owner Welfare Board, giving them access to welfare schemes, labour protections and social security benefits for their families.Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Wednesday said aggregators have been asked to furnish verified driver profiles, residence proof and domicile certificates for every driver operating on their platforms. The move is likely to spark interest because it introduces two key requirements that directly affect app-based drivers: proof of domicile and a working knowledge of Marathi. While the government says the language requirement is aimed at improving communication with passengers, it comes against the backdrop of an ongoing debate over the role of Marathi in public transport services.Officials said driver verification is critical to improving commuter safety. The transport department wants stricter scrutiny of driver records, identities and backgrounds to help prevent crimes and reduce accidents involving app-based vehicles. “Passenger safety cannot be compromised. Driver identity and residence verification are essential while welfare benefits must also reach genuine drivers,” Sarnaik said.The government has given aggregators a 90-day deadline to complete the exercise and submit the data. For drivers, the initiative could mean greater financial security and formal recognition. For passengers, it promises better accountability and safer rides. The exercise is expected to be one of the most comprehensive verification drives undertaken in Maharashtra’s rapidly expanding app-based transport sector.
