Nagpur: Maharashtra govt has approved recruitment of 5,012 assistant professors in govt-aided and non-govt colleges affiliated with public universities across the state. The decision aims to strengthen teaching capacity and ensure effective implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.The approval was granted through a govt resolution issued by the higher and technical education department on Wednesday.
The sanctioned posts fall under colleges functioning under the jurisdiction of the directorate of higher education and will be filled based on the revised workload calculated as per student strength as on October 1, 2025.Earlier, the state had permitted recruitment of 3,580 assistant professors (40% of vacant posts) in 2018 and 2021. However, vacancies increased significantly due to retirements, deaths, voluntary retirements, and resignations, necessitating fresh approval for large-scale recruitment.According to the resolution, recruitment will be carried out discipline-wise and in proportion to sanctioned workload, ensuring balanced distribution of posts. The entire process must be completed within a stipulated time frame and conducted in a transparent and rule-based manner, following University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. The govt has made it mandatory that colleges must have NAAC accreditation to be eligible for new appointments. Institutions with lower NAAC grades may be granted a 3-year grace period to improve their accreditation status, subject to a separate policy decision by the directorate of higher education. The resolution also clearly states that no recruitment beyond the approved 5,012 posts will be permitted under any circumstances. If the model code of conduct is in force, recruitment must strictly comply with Election Commission guidelines, it says. The decision is expected to significantly improve teacher-student ratios, enhance academic quality, and support smooth rollout of NEP-aligned undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Maharashtra.
