Pune: Maha Metro has fast-tracked work on the PCMC-Nigdi Metro extension, commencing track-laying and electrical work over the last month. Approximately 75% of the viaduct for this 4.4 km stretch is now complete, paving the way for the next stage of development, which includes track installation and power supply infrastructure for train operations, officials said.The PCMC-to-Nigdi stretch is an extension of the existing Swargate-PCMC Metro line. Groundwork for this extension began two years ago, in Aug 2024.The Metro administration aims to complete the bulk of the construction by next year. Officials noted that work will accelerate in the coming months, with a primary focus on finishing the stations—the most time-consuming phase of the project.Four stations are planned along the route after the PCMC station: Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti Shakti Chowk. Maha Metro confirmed that all station locations have been finalised. The project is not facing any major hurdles, as the land required for the stations and other infrastructure is already in their possession.Officials stated, “Last month, the administration initiated electrical and mechanical works. A week ago, track laying began from Akurdi station towards Nigdi. We have decided to proceed with track laying and related tasks in sections where the viaduct is already ready. This will save time and prevent unnecessary delays. The next six to eight months will be crucial in pushing the project toward its advanced stages.”Regular commuters travelling from Pimpri toward Nigdi have expressed that this line should have been part of the initial Metro project. Currently, passengers travel by Metro to Pimpri and must switch to PMPML buses to reach Nigdi. Commuters are urging the Metro administration to complete the work by the end of the current fiscal year in March 2027.Motorists have highlighted the poor condition of road stretches near Metro construction sites and have called for regular maintenance. Metro officials stated that they are working in coordination with the PCMC to ensure road upkeep and repairs are addressed.
