Today (August 22) is the 387th Anniversary of the Establishing of Madras (now Chennai) – Madras Day 2026 It was a historic settlement and today it has become the hub of culture and cinema. Chennai is not just a backdrop in Tamil cinema. It has been a character. Films have recorded its many moods, from the streets of North Chennai to the urban neighborhoods. Here are five Tamil movies that explored the different shades of Madras and Chennai.
‘Madras’ – The politics and identity of North Chennai
Pa. Ranjith’s ‘Madras’ (2014) was a gritty portrait of life in North Chennai. The film used a controversial wall to examine politics, power, friendship and local identity. Its characters expressed the desires and struggles of the people who lived in a close-knit community. The streets and homes were shown with a natural and lived-in feel. Karthi and Kalaiyarasan-starrer ‘Madras’ remains one of Tamil cinema’s most memorable portraits of the city.
‘Vada Chennai’ – The gritty world of North Chennai
Vetri Maaran’s ‘Vada Chennai,’ starring Dhanush in the lead role, explored the city through the lives of its working-class communities. The film moved through fishing areas, local streets, politics, and the world of organised crime. Dhanush’s character becomes part of a much larger story shaped by the city’s changing landscape. The film also looked at how development and power can transform neighbourhoods. It presented a darker and more intense side of Chennai’s history.
‘Chennai 28’ – The city of friendship and cricket
Venkat Prabhu’s ‘Chennai 600028’ (2007) showed a completely different side of the city. The film followed a group of friends whose lives revolved around cricket, friendship, and everyday fun. Its locations, slang and characters made Chennai’s suburban youth culture feel authentic. The movie captured the easy-going spirit of young men growing up in the city. Even years later, Chennai ‘600028’ remains closely linked with Chennai’s local flavour.
‘Madrasapattinam’ And ‘Angadi Theru’ – Two more faces of Chennai
‘Madrasapattinam’ explored Chennai through a historical lens, taking audiences back to the city during the pre-Independence era. Set in the 1940s, the film had a love story to showcase the old Madras, its streets, culture, and changing social landscape. ‘Angadi Theru,’ however, looked at the lives of young workers on the crowded shopping streets of Chennai. The movie portrayed poverty, exploitation, dreams, and the pressure of city life. Both the films had two contrasting eras and viewpoints of Chennai and how the city has evolved while maintaining its unique essence.
Chennai – A city of many shades
Through Chennai, Tamil cinema has explored politics, friendship, romance, ambition, crime, and everyday struggles. Films like ‘Maanagaram,’ ‘Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum,’ ’Metro’ and ‘Thirupaachi’ have also depicted different sides of the city. Each of the films has recorded a different mood, from the busy streets and working-class neighborhoods to the contemporary urban spaces. These stories together tell us how Chennai has grown and still holds on to its identity.
