Madhuri Dixit is returning to comedy after a long gap with her upcoming Netflix film ‘Maa Behen’, directed by Suresh Triveni. The actress said that keeping scenes fresh every take is the hardest part of comedy, adding, “It has to look like it’s happening for the first time.”

After a long break from comedy, Madhuri Dixit is set to return to the genre with her upcoming film ‘Maa Behen’. The actress, who has explored every genre over her four-decade-long career, talked about the Suresh Triveni directorial. She opened up about the joy of receiving fresh and exciting material at this stage of her career and also discussed the challenges that come with doing comedy.

Why Madhuri Dixit finds comedy harder than intense roles

Talking to Hindustan Times, director Suresh Triveni shared that comedy sets tend to be easier on actors since he does not need them to sustain a high level of intensity through a long shoot day. However, Madhuri pointed out that comedy comes with its own set of challenges. “Intensity you can keep throughout, but the freshness – doing the same thing each time and keeping it fresh – is very difficult. The intensity you can carry throughout the day. You are angry or sad, but in this (comedy), it has to look like it’s happening for the first time. That is difficult,” she said.

Madhuri Dixit on her history with comedy

Madhuri showcased her comic timing in some of the biggest masala entertainers of the 90s, including ‘Tezaab’, ‘Raja’, and ‘Dil’. “Those films used to have everything. There is comedy, romance, full masala. It wasn’t that we didn’t get to do it (comedy), but I hadn’t done a comedy in between. This was something I could sink my teeth into,” said the actress.
