Ludhiana: A high-tech convergence of scientists, farmers, and agricultural experts at Sarabha village on Friday signalled the city’s growing dominance as a premier hub for virus-free seed potato production, which is also helping reduce field fires. The “Potato Technology and Precision Farming” session highlighted how a blend of unique climate advantages and German-engineered machinery is transforming the district into a global supplier for the potato industry. Ludhiana is increasingly recognised as a critical centre for early-generation, certified seed potatoes. Experts at the session credited the region’s specific temperature profile and agro-climatic conditions for producing high-quality, disease-resistant crops.

Thanks to a rapidly expanding integrated cold supply chain, these seeds are now being shipped to major potato-growing regions across Gujarat and Karnataka, as well as various international markets. With the narrow window between the paddy harvest and Oct potato planting, farmers are turning to sustainable field preparation to avoid crop residue burning. The session featured demonstrations on in-situ incorporation (mixing rice stubble directly into the soil), mulching techniques (using residue to protect soil structure), and soil health (how these methods improve productivity while curbing environmental impact).Precision Mechanization and International TechAs labour shortages tighten, the transition from manual farming to “precision agriculture” has become essential. The event showcased advanced European technologies, including German-engineered equipment designed for high-efficiency operations.Key technologies demonstrated includes air-blast cleaning, which removes debris post-harvest and ensures seed purity and health; precision harvesters for mechanical lifting of tubers to reduce crop damage and labour costs; controlled-depth tillage, which is about targeted soil preparation and preserves soil moisture and structure; and mechanized grading for automated sorting by size/quality, which optimizes value for cold storage.High-Speed Crop RotationThe “potato-maize-moong” cycle requires a rapid turnaround that traditional farming cannot sustain. Experts emphasized that mechanized grading and handling systems are now the only way to maintain seed viability during long-duration cold storage. “The combination of climate advantage, scientific crop management, and precision mechanization is cementing this district’s reputation as a potato hub,” officials noted during the closing remarks.
