Bengaluru: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has bagged a large artificial intelligence infrastructure order from US-based Together AI, marking its entry into the AI factory business.L&T did not disclose the value of the order. It classified it as a “mega” order, which for the company means a contract worth between Rs 10,000 crore and Rs 15,000 crore.Under the partnership, L&T will build what it says will be India’s largest single-cluster AI infrastructure facility at its Chennai data centre campus. The facility will house 10,000 Nvidia B300 graphics processing units (GPUs), the high-powered chips used to train and run AI models.The infrastructure will be used by Together AI to train AI models, customise them for specific tasks and run them at scale. Together AI operates an AI cloud platform that gives companies and developers access to computing infrastructure and AI models without having to build their own data centres.The project will be housed at Vyoma.AI’s Chennai campus. Vyoma.AI is L&T’s AI cloud and data centre business, while its subsidiary, LTN Compute, is executing the AI infrastructure project.The Chennai site is being built as a large-scale AI data centre campus. Its first phase is designed for 250 megawatts of capacity, with power infrastructure readiness of 150 MVA. L&T said the site has room for further expansion of AI computing capacity.“Artificial intelligence is becoming foundational to every industry, and AI factories will power this transformation,” L&T chairman and managing director S N Subrahmanyan said. He said the Together AI deployment was a key part of the company’s plan to build large-scale AI infrastructure in India.Together AI co-founder and CEO Vipul Ved Prakash said the rapid spread of AI would require a major build-out of computing infrastructure globally. The company offers computing capacity, AI models and software tools that businesses can use to build and deploy generative AI applications.For L&T, the deal also expands its data centre business into specialised infrastructure built specifically for AI workloads, an area that requires significantly more computing power, networking capacity and electricity than conventional cloud computing.
