Welcoming freshers with thunder and rain, Delhi University opened its doors for the new session on Tuesday. As students entered wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, Lady Shri Ram College for Women celebrated womanhood and equal opportunity. The packed hall was filled with vibrant musical energy as the college song played, which was written by alumna Smita Vats and set to music by alumna Janaki Ganesh under the guidance of Pandit Viswamohan Bhatt. Energetic performances by the music and dance societies of LSR added a festive spirit to the day. The stage came alive with the fusion of classical, Indian, and Western music.

Prof. Kanika K Ahuja, principal of LSR shared short inspirational stories for students and explained what the magic of LSR is like. “Some of you will feel nervous, a little intimidated. Relax because at LSR we don’t rush you to bloom. We help you blow your roots first. Your teachers, your mentors, your seniors, your societies, that’s your soil. And one day, you will be the shade for somebody else. They say there is magic here at LSR. You’ll hear this phrase very often, and I hope you experience the magic because it’s real.” The acronyms for LSR’s values guide the students: Leadership with Social Responsibility, Lakshya, Sadhana, and Rachna, were interwoven in her address to students.

Nostalgic energy for alumniAn IAS officer Mugdha Sinha, batch of 1995 and Chef Gauri Varma, batch of 2004 were guests of honour who shared anecdotes from their time at the college. Mugdha Sinha shared her favourite memories and relatable incidents for students. “It’s an honour and privilege to be here today. It took me 34 years to move from where you’re sitting to this stage. I stand here with a lot of nostalgia and warm memories. While the principal addressed you, I thought it was my reorientation as well to see the change that has come about in LSR in the past three decades,” she said.

Talking about how teachers allowed students to be their authentic self, Gauri Varma recalled an anecdote from her time as a B.Com student. “I forgot there was a test and I didn’t know anything that I could write. Instead of leaving the pages blank, I wrote a live play-by-play of what was happening in class at that time. And I handed it in. My teacher did nothing. That is what LSR does, it lets you be you. I thought that I got away with it but now I realise what she did.”
