Kolkata: Cloud formation caused by a cyclonic circulation over North Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts triggered intense showers on Friday evening. The Met office has predicted the creation of a low pressure area by Saturday under the influence of this weather system. Kolkata and other coastal districts are likely to receive more rainfall over the next few days. While the Friday rain did not cause waterlogging, it slowed down the traffic movement in several areas for about an hour. The Alipore weather office recorded around 10 mm of rain, which occurred mostly within half an hour of the spell.“In the monsoon flow, when a low pressure system is brewing, it can lead to the formation of convective cloud that may bring intense shower,” said H R Biswas, head at RMC, Kolkata.According to a special IMD bulletin, there is an upper-air cyclonic circulation over North Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts that extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coasts around Saturday.The Met department has predicted heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall on Sunday in south Bengal. One or two places in south Bengal will get heavy rain till Monday. Met officials said Kolkata will get light to moderate rain between Friday night and Sunday morning. Heavy rain alert has been issued for South and North 24 Parganas, Howarh, Hooghly and other coastal districts, including East and West Midnapore.
