Mount Abu and Udaipur are among the popular choices

Ahmedabad: Nearby hills and destinations within driving distance of Ahmedabad are attracting holidaymakers for the Independence Day weekend as many travellers favour a relaxed two-day break over long journeys and sightseeing-heavy itineraries.Mount Abu, resorts in and around Abu Road and Udaipur are among the popular choices, particularly for families and groups, travel agents said. Easy access by road and shorter travel times are influencing bookings for the weekend.“People are increasingly looking at destinations they can reach by road in a few hours. The preference is for resorts, greenery, and a relaxed stay rather than an itinerary packed with sightseeing,” said Ankit Bajaj, a travel expert from Ahmedabad. The demand for short breaks also stems from Independence Day falling on a Saturday this year, giving travellers a two-day weekend without taking leave. Those willing to take additional leave, however, are planning longer holidays.Goa and Kerala continue to draw families planning four- to five-day trips. “We have good bookings for Goa and Kerala over the weekend, but the bookings are largely from families that have taken additional leave and planned longer getaways of four to five days,” said Virendra Shah, former chairperson of Travel Agents Association of India’s Gujarat chapter.“Short-haul travel is doing well because people want to make the most of the weekend without spending a large part of it travelling,” he added.Travel operators said holidays centred on casinos and nightlife have drawn less interest. Travellers who might otherwise have considered such breaks are prioritising resorts, green surroundings, and convenience. For many Ahmedabad residents, weekend holiday plans are simple: get behind the wheel, reach a resort within a few hours and spend more time unwinding than travelling.
