Kupwara, Feb 15: Thousands thronged Kariwan in Devar Lolab as the much-awaited Lolab Winter Festival concluded successfully, transforming the snow-covered valley into a vibrant centre of culture, sports and tourism.
People from across Kupwara district and neighbouring areas gathered in large numbers, creating a festive atmosphere amid the scenic surroundings of Lolab Valley.
Set against snow-clad mountains and open meadows, the festival featured cultural performances, winter sports, exhibitions and public awareness activities. Folk music and traditional dance performances highlighted the rich heritage of Lolab and adjoining areas. Renowned singer Shafi Sopori entertained the audience with popular songs, while Khushnaseeb Bukhari performed Pahari and Punjabi numbers that received strong appreciation from the crowd.
Winter sports competitions added excitement to the celebrations. Snow volleyball matches and tug-of-war contests witnessed enthusiastic participation from local youth, with spectators cheering despite the cold weather. The events encouraged sportsmanship and community participation. Local artisans and craftsmen set up stalls displaying handmade products, woollen items and traditional crafts. Many vendors reported good sales and thanked the administration for providing them with a platform to showcase their skills.
Line departments also installed stalls to spread awareness about various government schemes and welfare programmes. Public outreach material was displayed through hoardings, standees and printed content. Awareness against drug abuse was also promoted under the Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan through cultural messages and information material.
A plantation drive was organised at the venue to promote environmental awareness and cleanliness. Officers and officials participated in planting saplings, reinforcing the message of keeping the valley green and clean.
The festival reflected strong coordination between the civil administration, police, Army, elected representatives, artists and local residents. It strengthened the tourism profile of Lolab and generated economic activity for small vendors and local businesses.
Residents expressed hope that such initiatives would continue and that more tourist destinations in the valley would be opened to visitors. The festival was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Shrikant Suse in the presence of SSP Kupwara Syed Al Tahir Gilani, SDM Lolab Dr Mudassir Ahmad, Chairman DDC Kupwara Irfan Sultan Panditpori, Vice Chairman DDC Haji Farooq Ahmad Mir, Brigade Commander 8 Sector Kunal Sharma, ADDC Kupwara Mufi Fareed-ud-Din, ADC Kupwara Gulzar Ahmad Khan, DDC members, senior district officers and officers from the Army and Police.
