Rajkot: The family of a farmer from Sangnva village in Lodhika taluka of Rajkot district donated his liver on Dhuleti, Wednesday, giving a new lease of life to a patient suffering from liver failure.Ashok Savaliya, 52, had been undergoing dialysis for the past six years due to kidney failure. On Tuesday, he suffered a severe brain haemorrhage while on his way to dialysis and was rushed to a private hospital in Rajkot, where doctors later declared him brain-dead.Although both his kidneys had failed, Savaliya’s son Mit and relative Nisha Mehta, a hospital administrator, discussed organ donation. After consulting nephrologist and transplant physician Dr Divyesh Viroja, the family decided to donate his liver. As the hospital he was admitted to was not registered with the Gujarat govt’s organ donation coordination agency, State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), Savaliya was moved to BT Savani Kidney Hospital, which is authorized for organ retrieval. The transfer was coordinated by Dr Viroja and Dr Mihir Tanna. At the hospital, a medical team comprising neurophysician Dr Kartik Kachadiya, critical care physician Dr Karan Modhwadia and Dr Viroja declared him brain-dead. Transplant coordinator Dr Amit Gohel informed SOTTO and initiated the procedure. A transplant team from Kiran Hospital arrived in Rajkot for the retrieval. The retrieval was performed on Wednesday and the liver was transported to Surat through a green corridor arranged by Rajkot city traffic police and was later transplanted at Kiran Hospital.
