Gurgaon road dark for year, faulty lights pose risk

GURGAON: Non-functional streetlights along Bajghera Road have become a safety concern for commuters. Residents said the lights were installed by public works department (PWD) over a year ago but have not been operational since installation.“It has been more than a year since their installation, but the lights have not worked even for a single day. Some poles have also been damaged,” said Rakesh Rana, president of Sai Kunj RWA.Residents said the issue stems from a lack of electricity connection due to poor coordination between departments. While the road falls under PWD, the power connection was initially sought from the municipal corporation, which declined, stating the road was not under its jurisdiction.“The connection was applied for with MCG, but they refused, saying it is a PWD road. Later, we were told that PWD applied separately for a direct connection from DHBVN, but there is still no clarity on when the lights will become operational,” Rana said. The absence of streetlights has made the stretch particularly unsafe near an underpass where several accidents have been reported in recent months.“The moment you exit the underpass, it is completely dark. There have already been several accidents. It is dangerous, especially for two-wheeler riders. Additionally, there are potholes and unmarked speed breakers, making the stretch prone to accidents,” said resident Raul Yadav.“Since nearby markets have lights, areas surrounding them have some sort of illumination. Barring those areas, this 4km stretch remains poorly lit and unsafe after dark. Complaints have been raised with authorities, but no action has been taken so far,” Rana added.Responding to the issue, a PWD official said the road was transferred to GMDA last month. However, GMDA officials maintained that they are currently undertaking streetlight works only in sectors 58 to 80, and that either MCG or HSVP would be responsible for the functionality of the lights.
