Kanpur: As forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) witnessed light to moderate showers on Sunday evening after experiencing a day of bright sunshine interspersed with patches of cloud cover. The rainfall brought some respite from the sultry weather, lowering the temperature by around two degrees Celsius.Intermittent showers began around 6 pm. in line with the IMD forecast, providing relief to residents who had endured hot and humid conditions throughout the day. However, despite the evening rain, the maximum temperature continued its upward trend for the second consecutive day.According to the weather observatory, the maximum temperature was recorded at 34.9 degrees Celsius, which was 1.6 degrees Celsius higher than Saturday’s 33.3 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature remained almost unchanged at 26.4 degrees Celsius, just 0.1 degrees Celsius higher than the previous day’s 26.3 degrees Celsius.The city experienced prolonged sunshine along with intermittent cloud cover, resulting in oppressive humidity. The maximum relative humidity stood at 89 percent, while south-westerly winds blew at speeds ranging between 3.4 kmph and 7.2 kmph. The combination of high humidity and sunshine created uncomfortable weather conditions, prompting many residents to remain indoors during the daytime.The IMD stated that the southwest monsoon is expected to remain active over the next 24 hours across all districts of the Kanpur division, including Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Kannauj, Farrukhabad, Etawah and Auraiya. The department has forecast partly to mostly cloudy skies with the possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms. While sunshine may appear during the morning hours, high moisture content in the atmosphere is expected to keep humidity levels elevated despite recent rainfall.For Monday, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies over Kanpur Nagar with a more than 40 percent chance of scattered showers or light rain accompanied by thunderstorms during the afternoon or evening. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius, while relative humidity is likely to range between 80 and 90 percent, resulting in continued discomfort due to humid conditions even after rainfall.Weather expert SN Sunil Pandey of CSA University said that increasing atmospheric moisture and the development of favourable weather systems are likely to keep the Kanpur division under cloudy skies from July 27 to July 31. During this period, the region may witness scattered light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places. He added that intermittent spells of sunshine between rain events could further intensify humidity, while strong surface winds are also expected during the period.
