Jaipur: A leopard attacked three villagers in Umarda Kheda near Udaipur Wednesday morning, taking the total number of people attacked by the animal in the area over the past two days to five. One of the victims, 45-year-old Logar Lal Meena, died while undergoing treatment at Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital in Udaipur.The leopard attacked Jagga (60), Ritesh (20) and Kalu (40) around 6am as they were stepping out of their homes. It fled after the villagers raised an alarm and other residents gathered at the spot. The injured were taken to Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital for treatment.Former Umarda sarpanch Gopal Meena said the injured men had to be carried on cots to the main road, as their houses are located in a hilly area inaccessible to vehicles.The attacks came a day after the leopard injured two villagers in the same area. Around 6pm Tuesday, the animal attacked Logar Lal Meena (45) while he was sitting outside his house. He raised an alarm, prompting the leopard to flee. Logar Lal suffered claw injuries to his head and other parts of his body and was taken to hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.The consecutive attacks have left residents of Umarda Kheda and nearby areas concerned. Villagers said leopard movement had been reported in the area for some time and the animal had increasingly been venturing close to homes.Kanti Meena said the forest department should set up a cage trap and intensify surveillance to track the leopard’s movements. “The animal should be captured soon to prevent further attacks, particularly at night, as it has become habitual,” he said.A forest staff member said teams were tracking the leopard’s movements and villagers had been warned against venturing outside at night.
