Mumbai: A multi-storey leather art design and production centre to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship is proposed to be established at Bandra. Govt had in 2024 announced setting up a leather park in Deonar, a leather industry training and tanner centre in Kolhapur, a centre of excellence in each revenue division, and a leather industry training centre in Govandi , but none of them have taken off yet. Officials said the leather industry in Mumbai, primarily based in Dharavi, is a $1-billion informal economy employing over 2.5 lakh people across over 5,000 small businesses. TNN
