T’puram: The LDF on Tuesday called off its 18-day relay protest in front of city corporation office following the high court’s verdict requiring BJP councillor R Sugathan to undergo a six-month prison term in a criminal case.LDF had launched the agitation demanding removal of Sugathan from corporation council, alleging that a convicted councillor should not be allowed to continue in office.CPM district secretary V Joy said the protest was withdrawn in view of high court’s order and the fact that Sugathan would not be able to attend corporation council meetings for six months while serving his sentence. He added that the LDF had consistently demanded that Sugathan be barred from participating in council proceedings and be disqualified from the post. Since he now faces disqualification under the prevailing legal provisions, the agitation has achieved its objective, Joy said. The concluding meeting of the protest was inaugurated by V Joy MLA. Several LDF leaders, including M Vijayakumar, Kadakampally Surendran, V Sivankutty and V K Prasanth, attended the event.
