Pune: A 17-year-old teenager injured in an accident in Dharashiv district and being shifted to a Pune hospital for further treatment died, along with his grandfather, when the ambulance carrying them crashed into a stationary container truck on the Pune-Solapur highway early on Sunday.The accident occurred at Kedgaon village near Yavat, about 63km from Pune. The teenager’s mother, elder brother and the ambulance driver suffered minor injuries in the accident.The Yavat police identified the deceased as Devanand Suresh Mudholkar (17) and his grandfather, Shetiba Mudholkar (70), both residents of Renapur in Latur district.Devanand’s mother, Asha Mudholkar (45), brother Sachin (25) and ambulance driver Omkar Kanase, all from Latur, were discharged from the hospital after treatment.The Yavat police have registered a case of causing death by negligence against Kanase following a complaint lodged by Sachin.An officer from the Yavat police said Devanand had been involved in an accident in Dharashiv district on Aug 14 and was admitted to Latur civil hospital. He was later referred to Sassoon General Hospital in Pune for spine surgery.“The complainant, his mother, grandfather and the patient left Latur in the ambulance around 11.30pm on Saturday,” the officer said.According to the complaint, the driver was watching videos while driving. Despite being warned several times, he allegedly continued to drive recklessly. Around 4am, when the ambulance reached Kedgaon, it crashed into the rear of a stationary container truck.“Devanand and his grandfather suffered severe injuries, while the three others suffered minor injuries. They were taken to a hospital, where doctors declared Devanand and his grandfather dead,” the officer said.
