Silchar: A family narrowly escaped death after a massive landslide struck their house in Assam’s Sribhumi district during the early hours of Tuesday, leaving a child injured and the family homeless.The incident occurred at Latirgath, a hilly locality in the Brahmanshasan area, when a portion of a hill reportedly collapsed onto the residence of Manna Mahanta alias Mithun following continuous soil erosion in the area.According to local sources, Mahanta’s wife and young child were asleep inside the house when tonnes of mud and rocks suddenly came crashing down on the structure. Parts of the house were buried instantly, trapping the mother and child beneath the debris.Hearing a loud rumbling sound, family members and neighbours rushed to the spot and launched rescue efforts amid panic and chaos. Mahanta reportedly risked his own life to remove mud and debris in a desperate attempt to save his family members.Later, local residents joined the rescue operation and after prolonged efforts, the woman and child were pulled out alive from beneath the debris.The child sustained serious injuries to the leg after remaining trapped under the mud for a considerable period and was immediately taken to a nearby health centre for treatment. Doctors said the child’s condition is currently stable. The landslide caused extensive damage to the house, burying furniture, household items, important documents and other valuables under the debris. The affected family has been left in distress after losing their home overnight.Though no casualties were reported, the incident triggered panic among residents of hill areas, with many expressing concern over the possibility of landslides during the monsoon season.
