Leh, Aug 8: Ladakh’s tourism sector has witnessed a major surge this year, with tourist arrivals crossing 3.30 lakh during the first seven months of 2026, nearly matching the total footfall recorded during the entire year of 2025.
According to Lieutenant Governor Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena, a total of more than 3.30 lakh tourists visited the Union Territory between January and July this year, against 3.35 lakh tourists recorded during the whole of 2025.
The latest figures underline the growing popularity of Ladakh as a major domestic and international tourism destination, with the region witnessing particularly strong tourist movement during the peak summer months.
Tourist arrivals crossed the one-lakh mark in both June and July. As per the figures shared by the administration, around 1.07 lakh tourists visited Ladakh in June, while another 1.05 lakh tourists arrived in July.
The sharp rise in tourist footfall has been attributed to improved infrastructure, tourism reforms, better connectivity and measures aimed at strengthening the tourism industry in the Union Territory.
The administration has also highlighted the industry status granted to hotels as an important reform aimed at encouraging investment, improving tourism infrastructure and strengthening the hospitality sector.
Cultural and tourism events have emerged as another major attraction for visitors. Events such as the Hemis Festival, Sindhu Mahakumbh and Ladakh Astro Week drew a large number of domestic and international tourists, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the region’s rich cultural traditions, spiritual heritage and unique landscapes.
The administration said that the expanding road network and improved year-round connectivity have further contributed to the growth of tourism. Better connectivity has not only made travel to and within Ladakh easier but has also helped expand economic opportunities for people associated with the tourism sector.
LG Vinai Kumar Saxena said the remarkable growth in tourist arrivals is a reflection of enhanced infrastructure, streamlined tourism reforms and the administration’s efforts to strengthen the tourism ecosystem.
He also called for promoting Ladakh as a sustainable tourism destination, urging visitors to experience its natural beauty and rich heritage while ensuring responsible tourism practices.
