T’puram: Kerala Water Authority (KWA) will replace ageing and frequently bursting water pipelines in Panachamoodu Lane, Pattom ward, to reduce recurring disruptions to supply and improve distribution for around 500 families in the area. The work involves replacing around 350m of old asbestos-cement (AC) pipelines, which were laid in the 1980s, with PVC pipes of larger diameters. Existing 80mm pipes will be replaced with 90mm PVC pipes, while 100mm pipelines will be replaced with 110mm PVC pipes, a KWA source said. The ageing pipelines have been bursting repeatedly, forcing KWA to identify damaged sections and undertake repairs to restore supply. With the number of families in the locality increasing over the years, demand for water has also risen, putting additional pressure on the existing network.“The pipelines are old, leading to frequent bursts and disruptions in the water supply. Replacing them with larger-diameter pipes will help cater to the increased demand and provide a long-term solution for families in the area,” a KWA engineer said. The proposed replacement is expected to reduce recurring breakdowns and the need for repeated repairs. It is also expected to improve the reliability of water distribution for consumers who have faced interruptions when the old pipelines develop leaks or bursts. The project includes modifying existing water connections, installing air valves and interconnecting branch pipelines with the main pipeline network. These additional works are intended to ensure proper integration of the new pipes with the existing distribution system.Restoration of road sections affected by excavation is also part of the project. Concrete portions of the road damaged during pipeline laying will be restored after the work is completed.KWA has invited tenders for its execution. The work is scheduled to be completed within three months of the work order. The replacement is expected to provide a more durable solution to recurring pipeline failures and improve water-supply reliability in the affected locality.
