Kullu: Local MLA Sunder Singh Thakur has announced the approval of Rs 8.35 crore for comprehensive improvement works in the landslide-affected Inner Akhara Bazaar area of Kullu town. This decision brought much-needed relief to nearly 1,000 residents, who lived in constant fear since last year’s devastating twin landslides. The announcement came nearly 6 months after the disasters of Sept 2025, in which 10 people lost their lives in this densely populated locality. Consecutive landslides on Sept 2 and 4 buried several houses, trapping people under massive debris. The sanctioned funds will be used to implement a Detailed Project Report (DPR) that was already prepared by the concerned department. “A key strength of the project is that its design will be validated by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), ensuring world-class technical expertise in slope stabilisation,” said an official. The project involves coordination among multiple departments aimed at protecting the area from future disasters and restoring it to a habitable condition. Local residents have long blamed irregular construction in the upper Matth area and poor drainage systems for destabilising the slopes, resulting in landslides. The situation worsens during rainfall, when stormwater drains directly into sewage chambers, causing continuous leakage that weakens the hillside.Recognising these concerns, the MLA directed the Jal Shakti Department to immediately repair the leaking chambers. “A comprehensive assessment is underway for a long-term solution to drainage and sewage issues in the Matth area. Additionally, a separate proposal worth over Rs 7 crore was prepared specifically for rainwater management,” added the official. MSID: 128814058 413 |
