Srinagar, Aug 15: The University of Kashmir (KU) on Saturday celebrated Independence Day at its Main Campus and satellite campuses, commemorating the country’s freedom struggle and paying tribute to the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who made India’s independence possible.

Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan presided over the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Main Campus. The National Flag was unfurled with full honour and respect, followed by the singing of the National Song and National Anthem. A ceremonial guard of honour was also presented on the occasion by a contingent of the University Police.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Khan recalled the long struggle for India’s independence and the sacrifices made by generations of freedom fighters to ensure that future generations could live with dignity and honour. She said Independence Day is not merely an occasion to celebrate freedom but also an opportunity to reflect upon the responsibilities that come with it.

“Freedom was achieved after years of struggle and sacrifice so that future generations could live with dignity and honour. Independence Day reminds us of the responsibility that rests upon each one of us as responsible citizens. We must honour the legacy of our freedom fighters and work towards building a nation that thrives on unity, equal opportunity and the true spirit of democracy,” Prof Khan said.

Prof. Khan emphasised the important role of educational institutions in strengthening the foundations of a progressive and democratic society. She called upon the University community, particularly its students and young scholars, to contribute to the country’s progress through knowledge, hard work, integrity and a strong sense of social responsibility.

The ceremony was attended by the Dean Academic Affairs, Dean College Development Council, Dean Research, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Dean Students Welfare, Deans of Schools, Heads/Directors/Coordinators of departments, centres and institutes, officers of the administration, faculty members and other staff.

Following the flag-hoisting ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor led the participating officers, faculty and staff towards the grand Independence Day function at Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the University’s satellite campuses at Anantnag, Baramulla and Kupwara also celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour.
