Mangaluru: Under the ‘Nirantara’ programme announced in the last budget, the state govt is moving ahead with the implementation of an AI-based student attendance system in schools and PU colleges, starting from the academic year 2026-27.A govt order issued on Monday approved the invitation of tenders for a statewide mobile-based AI solution covering all govt and aided schools, as well as PU colleges. The ‘AI-Based Student Facial Attendance Monitoring System’ will be implemented across schools by the E-Governance Centre. The centre is directed to provide an AI-based attendance system aligned with the existing attendance system used for govt employees.
Following the successful completion of a pilot project under ‘Nirantara’, where the govt first implemented it in Gadag, the same will be extended across the state from the next academic year, said Shubhamangala RV, special officer and ex-officio undersecretary to the govt (planning), department of school education and literacy. She said that after the pilot project in Gadag, the AI-based attendance monitoring system saw a couple of upgrades, and is ready to be implemented across the state. “Currently, the govt is planning to implement it for govt schools and PU colleges. No decision has been taken so far on whether the same will be extended to unaided schools and colleges,” Shubhamangala said. On the advantages of the AI-based attendance monitoring system, she said that the initiative will save time, as teachers have to monitor attendance individually. “The new system can capture attendance in a group with accuracy and upload it. Therefore, the burden on teachers is reduced,” she explained.Sources from the department added that training will be provided for all staff before the start of the academic year. “Data on children’s absenteeism will be easily available,” she added
