MUMBAI: A hotel management student, Rinki Biswas (30), was arrested in Kolkata and brought to Mumbai for allegedly duping a 30-year-old man from Sahar Village, whom she befriended through a marriage portal in 2025, and allegedly stealing his father’s pension money and his mother’s gold ornaments collectively worth Rs 4.55 lakh, Sahar police said.Police said Biswas was arrested almost four and a half months after an FIR was registered against her on March 28. She had discarded her old mobile number, but police traced her location after she activated a new SIM card on the old handset that she had used last year before fleeing to Goa.It took almost 10 months for the complainant, AK Das (68), to approach the police due to ill health and to gather the courage to file a complaint after Biswas allegedly threatened to kill him and his son if they approached the police in May 2025.“Biswas was arrested on August 11 and she will be produced before the Andheri court after completing her police custody on Friday. She was tracked using technical analysis. After fleeing from Mumbai with the valuables from Das’s home, she worked at a hotel in Goa before taking admission to a hotel management course in Kolkata. The team is gathering details to ascertain whether she has duped others using a similar modus operandi in the past,” said a police officer from Sahar police station.TOI is in possession of the FIR, in which Biswas was booked under the BNS sections for theft in a dwelling house and criminal intimidation. In the complaint, Das said: “In December 2024, her son befriended Biswas through a marriage portal. She visited our home in Feb 2025 and claimed that she would marry my son after she got a job. She told us that she wanted to stay with us and would search for a job. During her three-month stay, she stole Rs 95,000 in cash that I had saved from my husband’s pension and Rs 3.6 lakh worth of gold ornaments. On learning about this, I asked my son to remove her from our house with the help of the police in May 2025. Later, she returned and threatened to kill both of us if we filed a police complaint.”Police said Biswas was arrested after DCP (West Zone-1) Nimit Goyal supervised a team comprising ACP Madhu Ghorpade, senior inspector Manoj Chalke, assistant inspector Amit Yadav and other staff. The team tracked her to Kolkata and recovered 70% of the stolen booty.
