Kolkata receives rain on Thursday

Kolkata: The city experienced scattered rain for the third consecutive day on Thursday. While Kolkata may get similar kind of thunder shower activities on Friday too, the Met office is hopeful of a fair weather by Saturday that coincides with Mahalaya. Met officials have cited a cyclonic circulation over northeast Bihar and neighbourhood and a trough that runs from the cyclonic circulation over northeast Bihar to Telangana across Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh for the current spate of rain.“We can expect these two systems to continue triggering some rain till Friday after which the chances of rain will reduce. While the city may wake up to a cloudy sky on Mahalaya, the chances of rain on Saturday are only about 30%. By Sunday, we can expect a fair and sunny weather,” said HR Biswas, head at Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata. While most parts of Kolkata escaped with light rain on Thursday, some pockets were pounded by a sharp but short spell. The sky remained overcast for most part of the day despite the rain amount being not very significant. But what was striking was frequency and the intensity of the thunder and lightning that affected many pockets. Alipore recorded 2.4 mm of rain till late evening.According to Met officials, cloud formed close to Kolkata sky, triggered intense rain in parts of South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah and Nadia, besides intense thunder and lighting. The impact of the cloud was also witnessed in Kolkata. After bumper rainfall in Sept, the city has already received rain on four days, out of the first eight days this month. The monsoon withdraws from Bengal between first and second week of Oct. So far, the Met office hasn’t predicted the monsoon withdrawal date from the state. “Conditions are becoming favourable for withdrawal of southwest monsoon from some more parts of eastern India,” cites an IMD bulletin.
