Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public office with a series of programmes from Sept 17, including lighting diyas and a three-day welfare scheme enrolment camp. Sept 17 also marks Modi’s birthday.On Saturday, KMC top brass held a meeting to chalk out a plan. Commemorative events will start on Sept 17 and end on Oct 10, which is Mahalaya. Modi could be in Kolkata to attend a pre-Durga Puja event at Eden Gardens.“We will procure 8.5 lakh diyas for Sept 17. We will distribute 50,000 diyas to each MLA in Kolkata Municipal Corporation area,” an official said. There are 17 assembly constituencies within KMC area. Barring two, all MLAs are from BJP.Sources said street theatre and other campaigns will highlight achievements of four-month-old BJP govt in Bengal. Drawing competitions in schools will be organised during this period, along with drawing alpanas on roads.The three-day camp, named Seva Setu, will be akin to Jan Kalyan Shivirs held immediately after BJP came to power in the state. It will be aimed at enrolling beneficiaries into various schemes of the state govt.“People who are eligible but are still not enrolled in welfare schemes can come to these camps for fresh enrolment,” an official said. Annapurna Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, Mukhyamantri Swasthya Bima Yojana, old-age pension and widow pension are some welfare schemes run by the state govt.Additionally, KMC health centres will organise special check-up camps for mothers and their children who receive vaccines under India’s universal immunisation programme.
