Kolkata: More than 150 men on the road, 290 portable pumps and a vigil at the sluice gates — Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is leaving no stone unturned to ensure water doesn’t accumulate in case of a downpour in the city.A KMC official said the 150 men were deployed in crucial areas, primarily in waterlogging-prone zones, to open manhole covers or unclog the mouth of gully pits in case of waterlogging. “In the event of heavy rain, opening the manhole helps drain out water faster. Similarly, waste, especially plastic, blocks the mouth of gully pits. These men will remove the plastic blocking the gully pit,” said the official. “We have also deployed 296 portable pumps in waterlogging-prone areas,” said the official.Senior engineers of KMC’s sewerage and drainage department will remain posted at 10 major drainage pumping stations. Engineers have been asked to stay at the pumping stations at night.
