Mohali: A businessman from Kharar alleged receiving repeated ransom calls for Rs 4 crore from an international number. He also claimed to have received death threats. The caller, who claimed to be a member of the Kaushal Chaudhary gang, allegedly tried to intimidate the businessman by citing the example of slain kabaddi promoter Rana Balachauria.A case was registered at City Kharar police station against the unknown accused under relevant sections of BNS. Further investigation is underway. Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu said, “A case was registered following the threat and investigation is on. Assistance of the cyber police is being taken to trace and apprehend the accused.”

According to the complaint, the businessman had been repeatedly receiving WhatsApp calls and voice messages from Dec 17, 2025. The caller allegedly demanded Rs 4 crore and threatened him saying, “I did Rana’s work, now I should do my own thing. If you don’t pay, the same thing will happen to you.”The complainant told the police that he knew Rana Balachauria and that the accused used his murder to terrorise him and his family. He also reported spotting suspicious individuals loitering outside his residence late on Dec 19, raising fears of possible surveillance.The victim handed over call recordings and message screenshots to the police. A technical team is analysing the cyber trail, including the location of the international number and details linked to the WhatsApp account.Police officials noted that similar ransom calls targeting businessmen and Punjabi artists have surfaced in recent months. Singers such as Himanshi Khurana and Mankirt Aulakh have also reported threats in the name of gangsters.Police suspect that gang operatives based abroad are using internet calling platforms to spread fear.
