Surat: Firefighting operations at the Khajod waste disposal site in Surat remained underway for over 24 hours, with authorities yet to fully contain the blaze.While the intensity of the fire has reduced, thick plumes of smoke continue to rise from the site, triggering concern among nearby residents over air quality and potential health risks. Recurring fire incidents at the dumping ground have further heightened these fears.Officials said the operation has been particularly challenging due to the vast expanse of waste and uneven terrain, which restricts the movement of fire tenders. To reach smouldering pockets deep within the waste heaps, the Surat Municipal Corporation has deployed earth movers and hydraulic excavators. However, the difficult surface has hampered progress, with some machines developing faults while navigating the mounds.Around 50 personnel from the Surat Fire and Emergency Services, supported by 10 fire engines and additional equipment, are engaged in the operation. Teams are also covering the waste with soil to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading.“The fire is not completely under control. Though we have managed to reduce its intensity, it may flare up again due to wind,” a fire official said.According to civic authorities, the blaze is believed to have originated in Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) stored at the site and spread rapidly due to strong winds. RDF, being highly inflammable, made firefighting efforts more difficult. The fire later spread to surrounding solid waste, widening the affected area.Officials said it is unclear how long it will take to fully extinguish the fire, though efforts are ongoing to bring it under control and prevent further spread.
