Srinagar, Sept 27: The month-long Keran Mela 2026 concluded on Sunday, bringing together people from across J&K for a celebration of culture, sports, tourism and community development in the frontier village along the Line of Control (LoC).
The closing day offered a vibrant glimpse of life in Keran, with children taking part in activities, young people competing in sports and families enjoying cultural performances. The event also highlighted the region’s natural beauty and growing potential as a tourist destination.
Cricket, volleyball, athletics, Gatka, tug-of-war and the Run for Fun were among the major attractions of the Mela. Local artists added to the celebrations with traditional music and dance, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The event also highlighted the changing outlook of Keran, where tourism, peace and stability are creating new opportunities for local residents. Homestays, eateries, handicrafts, organic produce and other tourism-related activities are emerging as potential sources of livelihood.
Alongside the cultural and sporting events, the Mela featured medical screening, career counselling, tourism guidance and drug de-addiction awareness programmes, focusing on public welfare and community development.
The campaign “Green Keran, Clean Keran” was another key feature of the celebrations. It highlighted the importance of environmental protection, cleanliness and responsible tourism, with further efforts planned to reduce single-use plastic and improve waste management.
The Mela provided a platform for local residents to showcase their culture, talent and hospitality while introducing visitors to the scenic beauty and tourism potential of the frontier village.
As the curtains came down on the event, the celebrations left behind a message of hope, highlighting the role of peace and stability in opening new avenues for tourism, employment and development in border areas.
The concluding ceremony featured final performances and prize distribution, marking the end of a month-long programme that brought together sports, culture and community initiatives in Keran.
