Srinagar, July 14: The border villages of Keran in North Kashmir are witnessing an extraordinary tourism boom, with nearly 3,000 tourists visiting the area every day. Once known mainly for its location along the Line of Control (LoC), Keran has now emerged as one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting visitors from across the country.
Surrounded by lush green mountains and the sparkling waters of the Kishanganga River, the village has become a favourite destination for nature lovers, photographers, trekkers and families seeking peace away from crowded tourist spots.
The rise in tourist arrivals has been largely driven by improved road access, better security arrangements and growing interest in border tourism. Visitors are increasingly choosing Keran for its beautiful landscapes, clean environment and the opportunity to experience life in one of India’s most beautiful border regions.
While the tourism boom has brought new economic opportunities for local residents, many believe the available infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with the growing number of visitors.
Local resident Choudhary Tasaduq said peace along the borders has played a crucial role in transforming the area into a tourism hub.
“Since there is peace on the borders, border tourism has witnessed a boom. Every day thousands of tourists are coming to Keran, which has opened new opportunities for local businesses and employment,” he said.
Tasaduq said the government should now focus on developing essential infrastructure to support the growing tourism sector. He demanded the construction of a Yatri Niwas, improved road connectivity, passenger sheds at key locations and better mobile network facilities in the area.
Residents said the increasing tourist footfall has also highlighted the need for additional public amenities, including toilets, washrooms and drinking water facilities.
They said proper infrastructure would not only make travel more comfortable for visitors but would also improve the lives of people living in this remote border village.
Locals expressed hope that the administration will take concrete steps to strengthen facilities in Keran so that the village can continue its journey as a leading border tourism destination in J&K while preserving its natural beauty and unique charm.
