T’puram: The Kerala College Sports League – Volleyball tournament, an initiative aimed at reviving the glory days of volleyball on college campuses across the state, will begin on Wednesday.The league is being organised jointly by the sports and youth affairs department, the higher education department under the Khelo India programme. The higher education minister Roji M John will formally inaugurate the league at Jimmy George Indoor Stadium, Vellayambalam at 10am. The sports minister O Janeesh will preside over the function, while the transport minister C P John will unveil the official college sports league jersey.Modelled on international sports leagues, the initiative seeks to create a new competitive culture in college sports and give fresh momentum and direction to Kerala’s sporting sector.The league is also aimed at identifying and nurturing sporting talent among young players by providing them with quality training and high-level competitive exposure. It is expected to transform college campuses into more active sporting venues and create opportunities for promising players to progress to national and international levels.Sixteen top teams that qualified from leading universities across the state will compete for the Kerala College Sports League volleyball title. Matches will be held at Jimmy George Indoor Stadium and GV Raja Sports School, Mylam.
