Chennai: Fishermen and visitors to the bustling Kasimedu fishing harbour say they are being forced to pay ₹10 for a bucket of water at a washroom that has remained dilapidated for more than five years. The lack of basic amenities is a concern at the market, which draws more than 10,000 visitors on weekends. With the harbour falling under the Chennai Port Authority, users say they have little clarity on where to lodge complaints about sanitation and water supply.The toilet block, more than a decade old, has two toilets, but only one is currently kept open for fishermen and customers. The facility lacks basic maintenance and an adequate water supply, adding to the difficulties.Fishermen said the problem becomes particularly acute during weekends and holidays when the market is crowded. “The motor pumping water to the toilet has remained unrepaired for years. We are charged ₹10 for a bucket and have no choice but to pay,” said K Swarnam, a fish vendor.Vendors and visitors said the authorities should either repair the existing infrastructure or provide a new toilet block with uninterrupted water supply and proper maintenance.Customers also said the condition was unacceptable given the number of people visiting the market. “We don’t mind paying ₹5 to use the toilet if it is properly maintained. The authorities should ensure that it is clean, hygienic and has water. Thousands of people come here, particularly on weekends, and they deserve a basic facility,” said J Subha Lakshmi, a resident of Manali and regular customer at the market.The lack of drinking water and a functional toilet is particularly inconvenient for elderly people and women. “We need a proper grievance mechanism where complaints regarding sanitation, water supply and maintenance can be registered and followed up. We are clueless about whom to approach to address this long-standing issue since the port authorities maintain it,” said K Mukesh Kumar, a fisherman at Kasimedu fishing harbour.Despite multiple attempts to reach, the fisheries department was unavailable for comment.
