Karnataka is grappling with a surge in dog-bite incidents, with over two lakh cases reported in just the first four months of 2026

BENGALURU: In just the first four months of 2026, Karnataka has recorded more than two lakh dog-bite cases, with 25 of those resulting in rabies-related deaths.

The highest number of cases – 13,997 – was reported in Vijayapura, followed by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) region with 13,412 cases, involving both stray as well as pet dogs.However, the highest number of rabies-related deaths – six – was recorded in Bengaluru Urban district this year. Other districts reporting a high number of rabies deaths include Ballari and Bagalkot.Over the last three years, Karnataka has reported a steady rise in dogbite cases and related deaths. In 2023, Karnataka had recorded over 2.3 lakh dogbite cases and 18 deaths. In 2024, the number rose to 3.6 lakh cases, with 40 deaths. In 2025, the state reported close to five lakh cases and 52 deaths.
