Mysuru: Karnataka govt has accorded tourism the status of both an infrastructure sector and an industry to encourage capital investment, develop tourism infrastructure and attract more visitors to the state, said minister for energy and tourism KJ George.Speaking at World Tourism Day celebrations in Mysuru, George said govt was ready to extend a “red-carpet welcome” to investors from across India and abroad, including non-resident Indians. Officials had been directed to simplify procedures and ensure that investors received necessary permissions and facilities without hassles, he said.Referring to Mysuru Dasara, he said the festival is an important pillar of Karnataka’s tourism sector. “Tourism and energy departments were coordinating preparations, including illumination and drone shows, in consultation with various departments and stakeholders,” he said.He said suggestions to hold a low-key Dasara in view of drought conditions were considered, but the expenditure on the festival was small compared to the state’s overall budget.Senior MLA Tanveer Sait stressed the need to transform Mysuru from a one-day destination into a year-round tourist hub. He suggested a tourism circuit linking Mysuru with major attractions in Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Hassan and Mandya. He also proposed keeping Mysuru Palace illuminated for at least 30 minutes daily throughout the year, operating the Dasara Exhibition year-round, developing theme parks on long-term leased govt land and creating a dedicated tonga circuit. A revamped tourism passport covering attractions such as Mysuru Palace, Jaganmohan Palace, Mysuru zoo and KRS on a single ticket was also suggested.Yatri Mitra, a tourist patrol vehicle launchedIn a first-of-its-kind initiative in Karnataka, department of tourism, Mysuru, on Sunday launched Yatri Mitra, a dedicated tourist patrol vehicle aimed at ensuring the safety, convenience and smooth travel experience of visitors to the city.The initiative, launched on World Tourism Day at Mysuru Palace premises by KJ George, operates on the lines of a mobile police patrol unit. The vehicle will continuously move across major tourist destinations, providing visitors with authentic information, guidance and immediate assistance.The service is intended to address concerns over tourists being misled by touts and intermediaries at popular locations, including Mysuru Palace, Chamundi Hills, Mysuru zoo and Mysuru railway station and KSRTC suburban bus stand.Two trained Tourist Mithras will be stationed in the vehicle to provide verified information on tourist attractions, routes and facilities, besides assisting tourists during medical, security or other emergencies. The service will operate until Oct 31, covering the Dasara season.
