Karnataka Bank has appointed Senior Advocate Dr. M Aruna Shyam as an Additional Director in the category of Non-Executive, Independent Director for a four-year term, subject to shareholders’ approval.

The appointment was approved by the bank’s board at its meeting held on July 18 and takes effect immediately, the lender said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges on Saturday.

According to the filing, Shyam, who holds a postgraduate degree in Business Law and a doctorate in Law specialising in Constitutional and Criminal Law, has been in active legal practice since 2004.

His practice spans civil, criminal, constitutional, corporate, banking, labour, insurance and service laws, with appearances before civil courts, tribunals, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), the High Court of Karnataka and the Supreme Court.

He served as the Additional Advocate General for the State of Karnataka between 2020 and 2023, representing the state in key constitutional, statutory and public law matters before the High Court and other judicial forums.

He was designated a Senior Advocate by the High Court of Karnataka on December 14, 2021, and has since advised and represented clients in complex, high-stakes litigation across various High Courts and other courts in the country.
