Drass, July 25: The two-day commemorative events marking the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commenced on Saturday at Drass in Ladakh, with the nation remembering the unparalleled courage, valour and supreme sacrifice of the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War.

The Kargil War Memorial, the focal point of the celebrations, has been adorned with special decorations in preparation for the annual tribute, symbolising the nation’s gratitude towards the Bravehearts of Operation Vijay. Veterans, next of kin of martyrs, senior Army officers, civil administration officials and invited guests are participating in the commemorative events.

The opening day’s programme featured Yudh Sansmaran at Lamochen View Point, Gauravmay Sanskriti at Vishwanathan Stadium, Vijay Bhoj, and Shaurya Sandhya at the Kargil War Memorial. The events highlighted the extraordinary bravery of the Indian Armed Forces and celebrated the spirit of patriotism that defined India’s victory in the Kargil conflict.

Observed annually on July 26, Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates India’s victory in Operation Vijay, during which the Indian Armed Forces successfully recaptured strategic mountain peaks occupied by Pakistani intruders after weeks of intense high-altitude warfare.

The commemorative programme will conclude on Sunday with the Shradhanjali Samaroh at the Kargil War Memorial, where tributes will be paid to the fallen heroes. The ceremony will also include interactions with the families of martyrs, inauguration of the Virtual Walkthrough Portal, and the flagging off of the Shaurya Vijay Yatra motorcycle rally.
