Kanpur: Kanpur Nagar has emerged as the third-best-performing district in the state in implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with rooftop solar plants having been installed in 53,382 households so far.The total rooftop solar capacity installed across the district has reached 172.06 MW, while subsidies worth Rs 4,32.18 crore have been disbursed to beneficiaries, officials said.Chief development officer (CDO) Abhinav J Jain, along with project officer, NEDA, Rakesh Kumar Pandey, reviewed the progress of the scheme.The CDO directed the officials to accelerate the installations and ensure that the maximum number of eligible households benefit from the scheme. He also stressed the need to create awareness about the benefits of the solar plants and subsidies available under the scheme.Kanpur Nagar has been assigned an annual target of 42,684 solar plants during 2026-27. Against the six-month target of 21,342 installations for April to Sept, the district installed 25,035 plants, exceeding the target by 3,693 installations.The district achieved 117.3% of its six-month target, with July recording the highest number of installations at 4,757. The monthly figures were 3,410 installations in April; 4,088 in May; 4,216 in June; 4,757 in July; 4,385 in August and 4,179 in September.The officials said that the rooftop solar plant also helped reduce carbon emissions. According to departmental estimates, the solar plants installed so far have resulted in a reduction of around 1.31 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions in the district.The scheme aims to reduce household electricity expenditure. Consumers can use the electricity generated by their rooftop plants for domestic requirements, while surplus power can be adjusted through net metering.
