Kanpur: Overnight showers and steady rainfall till Thursday morning brought welcome relief from the heat in Kanpur, but the respite was short-lived as bright sunshine later in the day drove up temperatures and humidity, leaving residents grappling with sultry conditions. With up to 79 mm of rainfall recorded and a Yellow Alert in place, weather activity is expected to remain intense across the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours. The rain began around midnight and continued until 7 am, interspersed with spells of drizzle. According to the weather observatory, the Air Force Station recorded the highest rainfall at 79 mm, while other automatic weather stations across the city registered an average of around 76 mm.The showers kept the morning pleasant, but conditions changed rapidly after the sun emerged. The maximum temperature climbed to 32.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature settled at 23.6 degrees Celsius following the overnight rain and thunderstorm activity.High humidity added to the discomfort. The maximum relative humidity touched 95%, while north-easterly winds blowing at 3.6 to 5.9 kmph provided little relief, failing to evaporate sweat effectively.SN Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, said atmospheric moisture and the formation of new weather systems were increasing the influx of moisture into the region. He said the Kanpur division is likely to witness cloudy skies from August 21 to 24, accompanied by intermittent strong winds and scattered light to moderate rainfall. Isolated heavy spells, along with thunderstorms and lightning, are also likely. He added that strong surface winds may occur, while humid conditions are expected to persist whenever sunshine breaks through the cloud cover. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said weather activity is expected to remain intense across all districts of the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours and issued a Yellow Alert. The forecast includes high humidity, dense cloud cover, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning across the region.
