Kanpur: A special awareness programme will be held at Kanpur Zoo on International Vulture Awareness Day on Sept 5, announced the zoo during a press conference on Thursday.Director of zoo Dr Kanhaiya Patel, and senior scientist and advocacy officer at Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Alka Dubey were present at the press briefing.Alka Dubey said vultures were extremely important nature’s sanitation workers. By rapidly clearing the carcasses of dead animals, she said, they played an important role in keeping the environment clean and controlling the spread of potential infection and disease.Dubey said she had been working with BNHS as a Senior Scientist for about 14 years and had been associated with scientific awareness and advocacy activities across the country under vulture conservation and Vulture Safe Zone programmes.During the programme, various awareness activities related to vulture conservation, their ecological importance, safe veterinary drugs, Vulture Safe Zone, and the role of ordinary citizens in vulture conservation will be organised.TKanpur Zoo and BNHS called upon all citizens, students, livestock owners, veterinarians, wildlife lovers, and media representatives to join the campaign.
